My story
Hi there, my name is Alexa. I am a postpartum doula focused on supporting families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss, and I am a loss mom myself. My husband and I unexpectedly lost our first child, our daughter Penny, the day before our due date in 2023 due to an umbilical cord accident. Losing Penny absolutely shattered us, and in those early days, weeks, and months, it seemed as though our life would never turn out the way we thought it would. It was ultimately self-care and community that brought us out of the darkness and allowed us to take our first steps into what was now, to us, a completely unrecognizable world.
Our hope was restored when we became pregnant with our living son, Jude, and brought him home safely almost a year and a half after Penny’s birth.
I know first-hand that pregnancy—and life—after loss is filled with dualities: sadness and joy, fear and hope, anxiety and peace, anger and gratitude. I also know that we cannot walk this path alone. That is why, now that I am further along in my own healing journey, I am committed to helping other families navigate the isolating landscape that is pregnancy and infant loss and rebuild towards a future that is, albeit different than expected, filled with joy.
My Approach
My approach to care is grounded in both my lived experience as a loss mom and in my formal training as a postpartum doula with Natural Resources SF and a volunteer trainee with HAND of the Bay Area.
Deeply Empathetic
No one truly “gets it” like a fellow loss parent, and I am here to bring in my lived experience as we navigate the ups and downs of pregnancy and postpartum after loss together. The deep connections and friendships I have formed with other loss families sustain and motivate me, and I am eager to extend this loving web to you and your family.
Evidence-Based
My training encompasses topics such as postpartum self-care and nutrition, lactation, newborn care, reproductive justice, perinatal loss and trauma, and grief. As a former scientist and engineer, I am detail-oriented and comfortable delving into the data and science when navigating the complexities of pregnancy and postpartum.
A Grounded Presence
Pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting after loss can be simultaneously a very joyful and extremely stressful time. I am not afraid of the hard stuff, and I will bring in my formal training, my network, and extensive resources to help get you and your family through whatever it is you’re going through. It is my goal, above all, to bring more ease, more rest, and more joy to your journey.
Heart-led & Intuitive
My children have been the greatest teachers of all. It is my philosophy that as a mother, I know what is best for my child, and I believe that every parent possesses this innate wisdom. There is nothing in a book that can quite prepare you for pregnancy and parenting after loss, and so I am here to walk beside you as you learn, grow, and build confidence in yourself as a parent.
